The Ingredience Series

“Let him go, Bruno!  They’ll kill you!”

The dog paused at the voice, his teeth clamped firmly around the man’s ankle.  He rolled one russet eye sideways, fixing his gaze on the squawking parrot watching from the windowsill.  “There’s worse things than dying,” he replied, hissing through frothing lips.

“Agreed,” the parrot said.  “But look.”  She nodded her head at the prone man.  “He’s passed out from the pain.  Time to run.”

“Are you sure he’s out?”

The parrot flapped her wings, flew down and landed near the man’s outstretched hand.  “Would I get this close if he wasn’t?”

“Well … ”

The parrot turned to the hand and brought her powerful bill around a finger, snapping it.  “Satisfied?”

Bruno snorted, opened his mouth, and the leg dropped from his jaws.  “I had to do it.”

“I know.”

“You saw what he was gonna do to that sweet little girl.”

“Yes.”

“I’m only part pit bull.  On my mama’s side.”

“It wouldn’t matter if you’re pure poodle.  You’ve bitten someone.  Now your life is in jeopardy.”

“But look what would’ve happened to the child if I hadn’t!”

“Who’s gonna know?”

“It’s not fair.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“If I leave, he may try it again.”

“Maybe she’ll tell someone.  Maybe they’ll lock him up.  But then he’ll probably go free after awhile.”

“That’s horrible.”

“I know.”

“I could stop him from doing it again.”

“They’ll kill you.”

“You said they will anyway.”

“True.”  The parrot flew back to the windowsill.  “I’ll keep a lookout.  But then we disappear.”

“You’ll come with me?”

“Of course.  Hurry.”

The parrot turned, looked through the window and saw the child outside, sobbing but safe in her mother’s arms … and Bruno’s teeth flashed in the dim hallway as he finished what he’d started.
